Dr M questions why action was taken when 3R laws is still under review
PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has questioned why action was taken against the alleged offenders of 3R (race, religion and royalty) while the government is still reviewing the laws.
“The Law Minister says the Government is reviewing 3R- related laws,” the former prime minister said in a tweet. But before that the government is already taking action against alleged offenders of the 3R.
“Has the Prime Minister the right to make laws on his own? Which part of the constitution gives the Prime Minister this power,” he added.
On July 21, Law and Institutional Reforms Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said existing laws may be repealed and even new ones introduced as the government moves to tackle the 3R issues.
She said current laws are being reviewed to see if they are still applicable in this century.
She pointed out that authorities were facing challenges in enforcing existing laws, especially due to the changing technology and social media platforms, where information can be freely – and anonymously – shared.
