No food poisoning outbreak in Semporna, says Shafie
KOTA KINABALU: There is no major food poisoning outbreak in Semporna despite reports of several cases at a resort in Kapalai recently, says Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
The Semporna MP said only a few cases were reported at the resort and immediate action was taken to address the matter.
“Compound notices were issued to the resort operator and health officials were quick to resolve the issue,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Aug 19).
He said authorities take the matter seriously and on alert at all times to prevent similar incidents.
“Enforcement will be stricter to ensure cleanliness and hygiene are prioritised for the safety and health of local and foreign visitors,” he said.
Shafie said while there was no major outbreak, proper food safety measures must be taken to maintain the hygiene and safety standards of resorts in Semporna.
His statement came after Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing ordered immediate action to be taken following food poisoning cases due to poor hygiene practices in Semporna, Sabah.
Tiong said this resulted in some tourists suffering diarrhoea, with needing hospitalisation recently.
He said several complaints were received from travellers in Sempona regarding poor cleanliness, with a lot of rubbish left strewn about, causing a foul stench.
They also complained of food poisoning, pest infestation and poor hospitality services.
Tiong warned that a red notice would be issued if the situation persisted.
