Chinese YouTuber Raised S$200,000 To Use For Mum’s ‘Cancer Treatment’; Allegedly Took Money To Holiday In Japan

He even uploaded videos documenting his mum’s death, but netizens are calling his bluff.

A Chinese YouTuber, who has been sharing vlogs about his life under the username “Jake的公開日記”, or Jake’s Public Diary in English, is now facing heavy criticism, after another YouTuber uploaded multiple videos accusing Jake of conning netizens of their money.

As it turns out, Jake had shared videos revealing that his mum is suffering from leukaemia, and that her medical fee amounted to about 1.7mil yuan (S$319,815). The medical fees were apparently too much for Jake to bear.

After his videos were shared online, Taiwanese netizens began donating to Jake, so he could bring his mum over to Taiwan for treatment.

Then, in February this year, he posted a video titled: “Taiwanese! Why do you guys treat a stranger so well!”

In the clip, he thanked the Taiwanese for their help. “We just happened to meet by chance, why are you guys so nice to a Mainlander like me?” Jake had reportedly raised about NT$5mil (S$212,488) in donations.

From then on, Jake regularly held live streams and posted videos as well, where he shared updates on his mum’s condition and her treatment with everyone.

However, some netizens began to grow suspicious of Jake. The YouTuber had posted videos documenting his mum’s passing, even including a clip where he films himself speaking next to what is presumed to be his mum’s body, which caused some netizens to question how he could bear to film content for his channel during such an emotionally trying time.

Soon after, Jake and his father went for a holiday in Japan, with the duo living it up in Business Class.

A Taiwanese YouTuber, “攝徒日記Fun TV” or Photographer Disciple’s Diary Fun TV in English, then posted a series of videos exposing Jake for allegedly misappropriating the money that was donated to him.

So, what’s the truth? That’s Photographer Disciple’s Diary Fun TV on the left, and Jake on the right.

The YouTuber shared that Jake had mentioned multiple times that his mum was seeking treatment at a hospital in Beijing, but in the documents he showed on his live streams, the bills were from a hospital in Hebei instead.

Jake would also delete his live streams once they ended, which caused many to suspect that he was attempting to cover his tracks, and hide exactly how much he received in donations.

The Taiwanese YouTuber also went on to share an account from a netizen who’d donated to Jake.

Said netizen donated NT$5,000 (S$212) to Jake, despite only earning a monthly salary of NT$30,000 (S$1,275). However, Jake blocked the netizen without a word after the donation went through.

Jake has since uploaded a video on his channel to refute these claims, emphasising that “with time, everything will be proven”. However, netizens are not buying his explanations, with most of the comments on his video lambasting him for making use of their goodwill.
