‘Red Shirts’ gathering called off
PETALING JAYA: The planned “Red Shirts” gathering in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (Sept 16) has been called off, says Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos (pic).
The Sungai Besar Umno division head said this was because Perikatan Nasional Youth moved its gathering to Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur.
“We planned to gather after Perikatan Youth said they would be at the Sogo shopping centre or Bukit Bintang,” Jamal said in a statement on Friday (Sept 15).
“Since they have shifted their venue, we will not hold any gathering.
Perikatan Youth planned to gather on Saturday in what was earlier meant as a protest against the Attorney General’s decision to withdraw charges against Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the Yayasan Akalbudi graft case.
It then modified the theme to a “Save Malaysia” rally.
The gathering, initially planned in front of Sogo, was instead moved to Kampung Baru after Zohor prayers at the Kampung Baru mosque.
However, it remained unclear if the organisers had obtained the go-ahead for the gathering as of Thursday (Sept 14) night.
Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the organisers’ initial application did not fully comply with provisions of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
