KL crime index dropped by 10% in first eight months of 2023
KUALA LUMPUR: The crime index for Kuala Lumpur showed a reduction of 10.3% between Jan 1 and Aug 31 compared to the corresponding period last year.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said the reduction of 10.3% or 334 cases is a testament to the hard work by all police officers and personnel.
“We also solved 2,072 cases this year compared to 2,488 cases last year.
“Violent crimes showed a drop of 15.8% this year while crimes involving belongings are down 8.8% this year compared to the same period last year,” he told reporters after the KL police monthly assembly on Wednesday (Sept 20).
Comm Allaudeen said with about three more months to go this year, KL police aims to reduce the crime index as much as possible.
“The safety and security of the public is our priority,” he added.
In the war against drugs, Comm Allaudeen said some RM53mil worth of drugs were seized between January and August.
“We also arrested 9,765 individuals for drug-related crimes so far this year. It is an increase of 350 compared to 9,415 detained last year,” he added.
Comm Allaudeen said efforts to bust scams in the city was not forsaken as 64 raids were conducted against call centres used by scam syndicates this year.
“Our prosecution rate is about 58%.
“We will intensify our efforts to ensure that scam syndicates are not running rampant,” he said.
Meanwhile, on the large-scale traffic operation codenamed Respect Traffic Laws operation, Comm Allaudeen said 24,155 summonses have been issued so far.
“The operation is aimed at creating more awareness on the importance of adhering to traffic laws.
“It will go on until Sept 30 with about 1,000 police personnel and officers involved,” he said.
Comm Allaudeen said matters of integrity in KL police were always a priority.
“We opened 157 disciplinary investigations this year compared to 164 last year.
“A total of 18 police personnel and officers were fired due to various offences while eight others were demoted,” he said.
