Six nabbed over metal theft worth RM180,000 in Ipoh

IPOH: A group of six men were arrested for allegedly stealing RM180,000 worth of compressed metal.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Yahaya Hassan said the arrests were made at a few locations in Ipoh, Selangor and Penang between Sept 20 and 21.

“On Sept 14, a robbery attempt was made at an electronics factory in Jalan Lapangan Terbang here.

“The suspects tied up a security guard before running away with the metal using a four-wheel vehicle (4WD),” he said in a statement on Saturday (Sept 23).

Comm Yahaya said the robbery was masterminded by a 40-year-old suspect who worked as a security guard in the same factory.

“The leader was the one who opened the gate to allow his acquaintance to enter the factory before tying the foreign security guard using a cable tie.

“The metal was found at a house in Bercham. The house belonged to one of the suspects’ cousin.

“Besides the stolen items, we also seized the vehicles used by the suspects, handphones, and clothes.

“The men are aged between 27 and 47 years old. The eldest suspect tested positive for morphine, and also had four prior records.

“Five of them have prior records and all of them are currently being remanded for five days for Sept 22 to 26 to help with the investigation,” he said.

He added with the arrest, the case has been considered as solved.

“We would like to thank the public for their cooperation and sharing of information that led to the arrest,” he said, adding that the compressed metal is used as raw material for manufacturing semiconductor.
