Tourist killed in Penang van crash identified
GEORGE TOWN: The Singaporean tourist who died after a van plunged into a ravine at Bukit Genting on Sunday (Sept 24) has been identified.
Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the deceased was Lee Kwee Yiam, 62.
“The tour company informed us,” he said in a text to the media on Monday (Sept 25).
At a press conference earlier, Wong said the victim’s remains were now at the Hospital Balik Pulau mortuary pending a post-mortem.
He said three of those injured in the crash had been sent to a private hospital while four were warded at the General Hospital.
Three others had been discharged, he added.

Wong said he had contacted the Singaporean High Commission in Kuala Lumpur to see what kind of assistance the state government can give to the victims.
In the 8pm incident, a van ferrying 10 tourists from Singapore plunged into a ravine at Bukit Genting.
The van reportedly skidded and plunged over 6m into a ravine.
Rescue operations ended by 10.26pm.
