While the 58th Golden Bell Awards came to a close yesterday, the internet is still abuzz with chatter over an embarrassing blunder that aired during the live ceremony.
During the In Memoriam segment, many were quick to notice that the organisers had used a picture of director Yu Tien Lung in a slide to honour Taiwanese actor Jiang Chang Wen, who died last year.
Just so we’re clear, China-born Hong Kong director Yu Tien Lung is still very much alive at age 74.
Prior to becoming an established director, the former actor is famed for his ‘big brother’ role in ‘70s show Jin Yu Yuan (金玉緣).
The late Jiang Chang Wen, on the other hand, was known for playing the roles of genteel young men in his heyday.
He is also remembered for starring in ‘70s Taiwanese dramas Yi Lou Xiang Si Qing (一楼相思情) and Gone With My Love.
Netizens were shocked to see the glaring error, with some saying they got a scare when they saw the picture of Tien Lung.
Actor Lu Jia Xing wrote: “Perhaps an image of the director popped up during the search of [Jiang Chang Wen’s] images, and the Golden Bell Awards staff member happened to pick it. That’s ridiculous!”
Other industry insiders believe the mistake might have occurred because the person in charge of picking the pics is too young to know how the two stars look like.
The awards ceremony organiser, Sanlih Entertainment Television, has since issued an apology for the error. They expressed regret for the negligence, and have since edited the montage to reflect the correct image during the show’s re-run.
