Five men nabbed over fight involving firearm in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Five men have been remanded to assist with investigations over a fight involving a pistol at a people’s housing project here.

George Town acting Deputy OCPD Supt V. Saravanan said the first suspect was arrested at the flat in Jalan Sungai while the other four suspects were arrested while fleeing in a car.

He said the first suspect however was taken to the Penang Hospital for head injuries.

“We were alerted of a fight between a group of locals at the Jalan Sungai flats here at 2.30am on Wednesday (Dec 6).

“When a police team reached the scene there was a man covered in blood with a head injury.

“The suspect was holding a pistol at the time but no untoward incident occurred,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Supt Saravanan said that two policemen (riding motorcycles) then chased down the four other suspects who drove off in a car.

“During the chase, the car and both motorcycles collided.

“Preliminary investigations found that the cause of the fight was a disagreement between the group of men.

“We seized a pistol and a sharp weapon that were used in the fight,” he said.

He said the suspects aged between 24 and 34 years old are being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 36 (1) of the Arms Act 1960 for possession of an imitation weapon.

“The men have been remanded for four days ending on Saturday (Dec 9),” he said.
