Underground water damaged new Meru Raya-Klebang road, says Ipoh mayor

IPOH: The flow of water underground led to the damaged surface of the recently-completed Meru Raya-Klebang connecting road near here, says Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.

He said the water flow had damaged the road’s subgrade and subbase.

As such, the road is unable to support heavy loads, resulting in damage to its surface, he added.

“The situation was first noticed in September, and remedial action was taken by installing a subsoil drainage system in some sections to channel the underground water to the existing drainage system.

“In October, such works were carried out for a second time by adding subsoil drainage at several other locations.

“However, continuous rain in the beginning of December caused the underground water flow to increase, weakening the subgrade and subbase along (a stretch of) approximately 35m,” he said here on Tuesday (Dec 19).

He said the city council’s engineering department has instructed the project consultant to carry out further studies and come up with a comprehensive repair plan.

“The road was completed in August, and the contractor will carry out the repair work… during the 12-month defect liability period,” he added.
