The acclaimed actor had just submitted a request to the police for a lie detector test yesterday (Dec 26) in a bid to prove his innocence.
South Korean actor of Parasite fame Lee Sun Kyun was found dead this morning (Dec 27) at 10.30am at the age of 48.
The police found his body inside a car next to charcoal briquettes near Wolong Park in the Jongno District of Seoul.
The actor was said to have gone missing the night before with family and friends saying they had been unable to contact Sun Kyun and had been searching for him.
According to media reports, it is unclear if Sun Kyun had taken his life but the police received an emergency call from the actor’s wife at 10.12am that Sun Kyun had left the house after writing what seems to have been a suicide note.
The acclaimed actor has been under investigation over illegal drug use since October this year. So far, he has tested negative twice.
Previously, Sun Kyun claimed that he was tricked into taking drugs by a bar hostess who had reportedly told the police that the actor had taken illegal substances at her home multiple times.
The actor’s lawyer told the media: “If she was speaking the truth, the drug test by the National Forensic Service should have come back positive, but it was negative.”
Confident to prove his innocence, Sun Kyun had requested the investigating body put him and the hostess through a lie detector test yesterday (Dec 26).
“As Lee finds himself in an extremely unfair situation, a lie detector test should be conducted on both of them to scientifically verify who is speaking truthfully,” said Sun Kyun’s lawyer then.
Sun Kyun is best known for his role as the rich family’s patriarch Park Dong Ik in the Oscar-winning film Parasite and was most recently seen in this year’s thriller, Sleep.
The actor is survived by wife and Korean actress Jeon Hye Jin and two sons.
