Boy dies, uncle seriously hurt in Langkawi crash

ALOR SETAR: A boy was killed while his uncle sustained severe injuries after their motorcycle was involved in a crash with a tipper lorry on Jalan Chandek Kura in Langkawi on Tuesday (Jan 9).

The lorry driver also tested positive for ganja, police said.

Langkawi OCPD Asst Comm Shariman Ashari said they were alerted to the incident at 5.16 pm.

“The accident involved Mohamad Iqmal Noor Din, 25, from Kampung Padang Wahid and his nephew Muhammad Wassim Dayyan Amyrul Amry, 11, from Kampung Bukit Tangga.

“The incident is believed to have occurred when the lorry, coming from the direction of Jalan Batu Belah Batu Bertangkup, made a turn at the junction to enter Jalan Chandek Kura,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 10).

ACP Shariman said the victims, on their way from Kuah to Kampung Chandek Kura, were unable to avoid the lorry and crashed into its right side towards the vehicle’s rear.

“The boy, who suffered severe head injuries, died at Hospital Sultanah Maliha.

“The motorcyclist, who sustained severe head and shoulder injuries, is still receiving treatment at the same hospital.

“The 51-year-old lorry driver has been arrested and his urine test came back positive for ganja.

“The case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (for causing death while driving under the influence),” he said. – Bernama
