“My Ears Are Bleeding!”: Anita Mui Tribute Performance By HK Newcomers Falls Flat

We don’t think viewers were expecting the newbies to be so out-of-tune.

Back in December last year, the Hong Kong Metropolis Awards Ceremony took to paying tribute to the late Anita Mui to commemorate the 20th anniversary of her passing.

The Cantopop queen was 40 when she died from cervical cancer in 2003.

We don’t think anyone expected the tribute to be this disastrous.

Before the singers took to the stage, viewers were already criticising the stage setup and presentation calling it “terrible”.

What got everyone talking though was a mostly out-of-tune performance by a group of 25 newcomers.

The almost 15-minute set had all of them sing parts of Anita’s most famous hits before everyone gathered for an encore of ‘The Song of Sunset”.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Anita Mui’s passinng, a 15-minute tribute performance was fronted by a group of 25 newbie singers.

Netizens were so horrified by what they heard they quickly flooded the comments section with their criticism.

“OMG! What on earth did I just listen to?” wrote one traumatised user.

Another dramatically said, “My ears are bleeding!”

One tried to look at it positively and commended them for singing live and said: “This proves that there is no lip-syncing.”

Hmm… Will this be the de-facto response for bad singing at live events from now onwards?

This is not the first time a tribute concert to Anita has been criticised.

For Anita’s 10th death anniversary in 2013, a network that televised a special concert in her memory was slammed for its “half-hearted presentation”.
