How much are you willing to pay for a piece of your favourite idol?
For fans of Jang Wonyoung of popular K-pop girl group IVE, the price, it seems, is tens of thousands, if this listing on a Chinese e-commerce site is to be believed.
The sextet, made up of members Ahn Yujin, Gaeul, Rei, Liz, Leeseo and Jang Wonyoung, are currently on their first world tour and had just wrapped their show at the Singapore Indoor Stadium over the weekend (Feb 24).
Recently, Wonyoung’s hair was put up for sale at an extortionate starting price of 99,999 yuan (S$19K).
Yep, you read right, her hair. Three strands to be exact.
According to the listing, the hairs were “plucked” from the 19-year-old singer’s head during one of their concerts and you can send it for a DNA test to prove its authenticity.
Bidding for the hair, which started on Feb 20, ends Mar 2.
As of press time, the highest bid has surpassed 103K yuan (S$19.7K).
If that isn’t a testament to Wonyoung’s popularity, we don’t know what is.
Netizens were shocked by the price fans are willing to pay for the star’s hair.
“The person buying the hair is ridiculous, but the one who put up the listing is even more ridiculous,” read one comment.
Another asked: “What is anyone going to do with three strands of hair?”
Others were also curious as to how one can prove that the hair indeed belongs to Wonyoung.
After all, a DNA test is useless if the potential buyer has nothing to test his purchase against.
Unsurprisingly, most were skeptical of its authenticity and warned that this is likely to be a scam.
The K-pop group has a security team surrounding them at all times, even more so when they’re overseas, there is no way anyone can get close to Wooyoung, much less “pluck” her hair.
