Momentary chaos hits Selangor state assembly over Sultan’s letter to Hadi Awang

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor state assembly sitting was hit with momentary chaos over the royal rebuke PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang received from Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Batu Tiga assemblyman Danial Al-Rashid Haron ignited the chaos during the debate by calling out Selangor PAS commissioner and Paya Jaras assemblyman Datuk Dr Ab Halim Tamuri to explain the matter to the house.

Sultan Sharafuddin’s private secretary Datuk Muhamad Munir Bani had sent Dr Ab Halim a letter in which Abdul Hadi was admonished by the Ruler.

Dr Ab Halim declined to talk about the issue and said he would leave the matter to Abdul Hadi.

Amanah’s Danial Al-Rashid then said Dr Ab Halim and Ijok assemblyman Jefri Mejan – who is also from PAS – had not mentioned the matter during their turn to speak earlier.

“The letter said that Abdul Hadi’s statement was not only confusing but could also create anxiety which can eventually divide the Muslims, especially the Malays,” said Danial Al-Rashid.

Dr Ab Halim’s Perikatan Nasional comrades came to his defence and said the letter had nothing to do with the day’s proceedings and should not be brought up.

The Opposition tried to get Danial Al-Rashid to retract what he had said but their attempts were rejected by Deputy Speaker Mohd Kamri Kamaruddin.

This infuriated Bersatu’s Taman Medan assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin, who confronted Mohd Kamri.

“What if I said DAP was communist,” asked Dr Afif, which led to several Opposition members shouting “DAP communist.”

He added that Sultan Sharafuddin’s letter should not be raised during the proceedings.

Opposition chief Datuk Seri Azmin Ali then told Mohd Kamri to instruct assemblymen to not use the sitting to attack others.

Later in the day when approached at the sidelines of the state assembly sitting, Dr Ab Halim declined to say anything about the matter.
