Third KK Super Mart outlet attacked, cops hunting for suspect

KUCHING: Police here are hunting a suspect involved in hurling a Molotov cocktail at the KK Super Mart outlet in Jalan Satok here, making it the third such incident nationwide within a week.

Kuching police chief Asst Comm Ahsmon Bajah confirmed that a report on the incident was lodged by the outlet on Sunday.

“Police received a report from a 25-year-old store worker, who reported that a Molotov cocktail caused boxes containing beverages placed in front of the store to catch fire,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which pertains to “mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage,” ACP Ahsmon said in a statement yesterday.

If convicted, a person can be imprisoned up to seven years or fined, or both.

The recent controversy over the “Allah” socks issue involving a KK Super Mart outlet has resulted in calls by certain quarters to boycott the chain.

Last Saturday, a KK Super Mart outlet in Kuantan was attacked with a similar device, following a failed attempt to sabotage another outlet in Bidor, Perak earlier last week.

Following the two earlier incidents, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urged the public not to take matters into their own hands and to let the law take its course.

National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang also recently stressed that as responsible citizens, it is the duty of all to protect the peace and harmony of the country by avoiding provocative acts and violence that may lead to conflict and unrest.

On the latest incident here, ACP Ahsmon said those with information should contact investigating officer Sgt Ceremona Nasim at 013-855 4168 or the nearest police station.

People must not indulge in any form of vigilantism, he added.
