Cops: KLIA shooting suspect was in midst of divorce, had criminal record

SEPANG: The suspect who shot a bodyguard at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 on Sunday (April 14) and his intended target were in the midst of a divorce, according to police.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain also said the suspect had previously been under police investigation.

He said that according to records, the suspect, identified as Hafizul Harawi, had reports lodged against him since as early as 2016.

“The victim had two reports for criminal intimidation, the latest in December last year.

“Based on that report, the suspect was arrested, and we had submitted the investigation paper (to the deputy public prosecutor), but we were then given additional instructions.

“Because of that incident, the (target of Sunday’s shooting) hired bodyguards,” he told reporters.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily added that police had also previously investigated the suspect for theft and impersonating a public officer.

It was reported that a murder attempt at KLIA left a bodyguard severely injured.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said in a statement that a shooting occurred at around 1.30am in the arrival hall.

A man fired two shots, one of which hit the victim, a personal bodyguard.

The suspect then fled the scene.

Follow-up investigations showed that the suspect had intended to shoot his wife, who was waiting for the arrival of an umrah group.

The case is being investigated as an attempted murder under section 307 of the Penal Code and section 8 of the Arms Act 1960.
