K-pop girl group Le Sserafim wanted to deliver an unforgettable performance at their Coachella debut last weekend (Apr 13). And they did, but just not quite the way they expected.
The quintet, made up of Kim Chaewon, Kazuha, Hong Eunchae, Huh Yunjin, and Sakura, has gone viral for their weak vocals and out-of-tune performance, which netizens say sounded like a “car crash”.
Le Sserafim is the fourth K-pop girl group to take the Coachella stage, following 2NE1, aespa, and Blackpink, and had huge shoes to fill after the latter’s headlining performance at the US music festival last year.
Unfortunately, not only did they fail to live up to expectations, their set has been dubbed “the worst Coachella performance”.
The band put on a high-energy 40-minute set, which saw them singing and dancing their heart out to 10 tracks including hits like ‘Antifragile’, ‘Fearless” and ‘The Great Mermaid’.
However, they seemed to run out of steam towards the end of their performance and that’s when things started to unravel.
According to reports, some members struggled to catch their breaths, which resulted them in going off-key and “causing noise pollution”.
Netizens were brutal in their comments.
One said the girls should “stick to performing on pre-recorded shows instead”, while another told Sakura, who is passionate about knitting to “stop knitting hats and practice singing”.
Some fans defended their performance, saying “they did well considering the circumstances” and that their singing “wasn’t that bad live”.
Despite criticism, Sakura took to social media to share that their Coachella outing was their “best stage [performance] to date”.
While she acknowledged that they faced challenges and could have performed better, it’s her desire to create “an unforgettable experience for the audience” and gave it her all during their performance.
Hopefully, things will improve when they take the Coachella stage again on Apr 20.
