National kayaker Siti Nurul injured after hit by drunk driver

PETALING JAYA: National kayaker Siti Nurul Masyitah Elias was seriously injured after being hit and dragged when the motorcycle she was riding collided with a car in Johor Baru.

She was dragged some 600 metres by the car driven by a man believed to be drunk on the Eastern Dispersal Link on Saturday (May 11).

Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan Mechanical Engineering Department’s student association in a statement said Nurul, 22, is currently being treated at a private hospital for her injuries.

“According to witnesses and the dashcam recording, the car in question was driven recklessly before hitting Nurul who was riding a motorcycle.

“She was then dragged for 600 meters.

“The victim often commutes from Ibrahim Sultan Polyteknik to her home to look after her sick parents.

“The victim’s mother has spinal problems due to an accident while the victim’s father needs dialysis treatment.

“Please pray that the victim will be cured soon,” according to the association on Tuesday (May 14).

Nurul won the bronze medal for the country in a kayak race during the SEA Games 2023.

Based on posts that have since gone viral on social media, several photos of the accident were shared including a photo of a man who is alleged to be a suspect making a ‘peace’ sign.

Meanwhile, south Johor Bahru district police chief ACP Raub Selamat confirmed that he had received a report of the incident and that an investigation was underway.
