Best SPM results since 2013, says Education DG

PUTRAJAYA: There’s been an overall improvement for the 2023 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations compared to 2022.

Education director-general Azman Adnan said the National Average Grade (GPN) for 2023 is 4.60, compared to 4.74 in 2022.

A lower GPN score indicates better performance.

“A total of 349, 297 (93.5%) of the candidates qualify for the SPM certificate,” he said when announcing the SPM 2023 results analysis on Monday (May 27).

“This has been the best results since 2013 when Bahasa Malaysia (BM) and History became compulsory passes in order to qualify for the certificate,” he added.

Azman said 3.1% (11,712) of the candidates did excellently, scoring A+, A- or A in all the subjects they took, an increase from the 2.7% in 2022.

The Subject Average Grade (GPMP) for all the STEM elective subjects for pure sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and Additional Mathematics improved.

A total of 395,870 candidates sat for the national examination last year.
