Sarawak welcomes The Great British Circus for the first time, says state minister

KUCHING: Sarawak is gaining ground as a venue to host international events in tandem with its tourism development, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The state Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister said new happenings were coming to Sarawak alongside established events like the Rainforest World Music Festival and Borneo Jazz Festival.

“These events contribute to the local economy by creating jobs for our local talents and generating revenue for our local businesses,” he said on Thursday (May 30).

In connection with this, Abdul Karim said the Great British Circus would make its first appearance in Sarawak next month.

He said the circus was an opportunity for city folk and visitors to be entertained.

“We’re happy to welcome the presence of the circus in Sarawak.

“It will provide entertainment for the whole family.

“Young people can take a break from an overly gadget-centric environment to be part of an in-person experience,” he said.

The circus is scheduled to perform at the Sarawak State Stadium from June 8 to July 14 before moving to Miri on July 26-Aug 25.

“We will assist them if they want to perform elsewhere in Sarawak, such as Sibu,” Abdul Karim said.

Circus founder Kiril Kirilov said Sarawak was now one of the best places for outdoor events.

“We’re happy to come to Sarawak at a time when the state is developing so many events.

“We want to be a part of this, and we hope to bring the circus to as many people as possible,” he said.

Kirilov said the two-hour show would feature various acts, including comedy, acrobatics, dance, songs, and extreme acts.

“Our performers come from over 10 countries; one of them is a Sarawakian,” he added.
