Wei Chong-Kai Wun stun world champs to advance to second round of Indonesian Open

PETALING JAYA: Men’s doubles shuttlers Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the Indonesian Open when they toppled South Korea’s world champions Kang Min-hyuk-Seo Seung-jae in the first round.

World No. 20 Wei Chong-Kai Wun showed great fighting spirit to come from behind and record a brilliant 20-22, 21-16, 21-17 win over the Koreans in 59 minutes at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta on Tuesday (June 4).

It was the Malaysian pair’s first-ever victory over their opponents after losing twice to them last year in the final of the Malaysian Masters and first round of the Korean Open.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun will next play Denmark’s world No. 15 Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard in the second round on Thursday (June 6).

National No. 1 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik also safely made it into the second round after easily beating Vinson Chiu-Joshua Yuan of the United States 21-14, 21-11.

World No. 5 Aaron-Wooi Yik will play Taiwan’s world No. 25 Lu Ching-yao-Yang Po-han next.

Meanwhile, youngsters Choong Hon Jian-Mohd Haikal Nazri gave a good account of themselves before going down fighting 21-18, 16-21, 17-21 to Taiwan’s reigning Olympic champions Lee Yang-Wan Chi-lin.
