Police cripple job scam syndicate operating in Melaka, seven nabbed including one teen

MELAKA: Police have crippled a job scam operation (call centre) operating in a condominium in Kota Laksamana with the arrest of seven locals, including a teenager.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the syndicate was uncovered following a raid on the residential unit at 6pm on Thursday (June 6).

“The Commercial Crime Investigation Division from the state police headquarters and Melaka Tengah acted on intelligence information regarding online job scam activities (call centre) before conducting the raid.

“All those detained, including a woman, are aged between 16 to 26 years and have been actively involved in the scam for the past three months,” he said on Friday (June 7).

ACP Christopher Patit said the raiding party also seized four tabletop computers and three mobile phones.

Preliminary investigations showed that the syndicate had been targeting victims by offering them commissions for tagging social media pages. Each victim was given 50 online tasks a day.

ACP Christopher Patit said RM12 to RM60 were offered for each task, and the commissions were supposed to be transferred through online payment modes.

He noted that police managed to solve ten cheating cases reported throughout the country, with losses amounting to RM132,390, with the arrest of the seven.

ACP Christopher Patit added that all seven have been remanded until June 10 to assist in the investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
