Red-hot Ronnie shines in Selangor’s win against Perak

PETALING JAYA: Selangor beat Perak 2-1 in the Super League at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Sunday (June 23) to continue their winning run in the league.

Ronnie Fernandez of Chile was the toast of the team when he scored two goals.

He struck first in the 23rd minute when he capitalised on a loose save made by Perak goalkeeper Ramadhan Abd Hamid off a Safuwan Baharuddin header from a corner.

Fernandez added his second in the 38th minute when he buried a penalty passed Ramadhan.

But the Red Giants could not keep a clean sheet after they were one man down in the second half.

Selangor were dealt a blow in the 63rd minute when Ghanaian midfielder Alex Agyarkwa was sent off after a VAR check after he was adjudged to have stamped on Wan Zack Wan Haikal’s ankle.

Perak capitalised on having an extra man and reduced the deficit in the 79th minute through substitute winger Nur Azfar Zikri Azhar.

Coach Nidzam Jamil was delighted with the way his boys defended after conceding a goal.

“The aim was to continue a clean sheet but it’s never easy with 10 men and also playing against a combative side like Perak,” said Nidzam.

“I’m happy for Ronnie, he got two and showed commitment by defending from the front. Alex was unlucky with the decision made.
