Driver arrested for hit-and-run incident caught on video in Johor

JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested a 20-year-old man to help investigate a hit-and-run case that went viral on social media.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the man was arrested after lodging a police report on Saturday (June 29).

“We have received the police report at 8.24am, involving a road accident that occurred on the same day, at 7.47am, at KM0.7, Jalan Pantai, Permas Jaya, here.

“The accident is believed to have occurred after a car driven by a 20-year-old man collided with a motorcycle ridden by a 50-year-old man while travelling at the location.

“However, after the accident, the driver did not stop his vehicle and fled the scene,” he said in a statement.

ACP Raub added that another motorcycle ridden by a 20-year-old man then pursued the involved car for approximately 1.5km to the Taman Iskandar area.

“During a discussion, the car driver suddenly attempted to flee again and hit and dragged the motorcycle that belonged to the 20-year-old man, that was parked in front of him for 100 metres.

“Those involved in the incident did not sustain any injuries and have also lodged a police report to the traffic police station at the Johor Baru South police headquarters,” he added.

ACP Raub also shared that the breathalyser and urine tests were conducted on the driver and found him free from alcohol and drug influence.

“The driver was detained when he came to file a police report on Saturday, at 1pm for further investigation.

“The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving that can endanger the lives of other road users,” he said.

ACP Raud also noted that the police wish to clarify that there were no incidents in which the family of the 20-year-old rider was asked to leave the station while assisting with the investigation.

“Instead, the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding by the victim’s family regarding the investigation procedure, where the family answered each question posed by the investigating officer rather than the victim,” he explained.

Earlier, a Facebook user named Vimuna Ponkalaivannan uploaded three videos of the incident to a Facebook group page.

In one of the videos, a man can be seen dragging a motorcycle in front of his car after refusing to stop.
