MACC nabs two subcontractors in highway project graft probe

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has nabbed two more individuals for alleged corruption over a highway construction project in the Klang Valley worth more than RM1bil.

The duo are the chairman and director of a company which were sub-contractors for the project.

The chairman, with a Datuk title, was remanded until July 6 while the director was remanded until July 4.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Irza Zulaikha following an application by the MACC at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (July 2).

Sources said the suspects were detained between 9pm and midnight on Monday (July 1) at the MACC headquarters.

“Both men are suspected of giving more than RM200,000 in bribes to officers of a statutory body in exchange for getting contracts to construct the highway.

“They were also believed to have given bribes to officers of a highway concessionaire,” the source said.

Meanwhile, MACC senior investigation director Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim confirmed the arrests, stating the case is being investigated under Section 16(b)(A) of the MACC Act.

He also confirmed that all suspects previously detained, including a chief executive officer of a highway concessionaire, were released on bail on Monday.
