Water supply in Putatan, Penampang expected to improve this week

KOTA KINABALU: Low water pressure experienced by thousands of consumers in the Penampang and Putatan areas is expected to improve this week, says Datuk Shahelmey Yahya.

The Works Minister said the water supply disruption was caused by the recent flood that hit several districts on the west coast of Sabah.

He added that floods caused the intake point of the Kasigui water treatment plant in Penampang to malfunction, affecting the distribution of 50 million litres of water supply per day.

“The second water intake at Madsiang has been activated to supply raw water to the Kasigui plant, which now processes approximately 25 to 30 million litres of water daily,” he said on Wednesday (July 3).

He said they are waiting for the water level to drop to at least four metres for the closed water intake point to start operating again.

Shahelmey added that Sabah Water Department would prioritise areas with greater need such as hospitals, and sought the understanding of those asking for water to be sent to residential areas.

The Kasigui plant is temporarily closed for maintenance due to floods that began on Sunday (June 30).
