Suspect dies and two police injured in Muar car chase

MUAR: A man was killed and two policemen suffered serious injuries in an accident following a 1km car chase here.

Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the 4am incident on Thursday (June 27) occurred when the suspect attempted to avoid being arrested by the police.

“Based on early investigations, it is believed that two police personnel were patrolling the Parit Jawa area in a police mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) when they apprehended the suspect.

“The man tried to escape and sped off in his car.

“The police then chased after the car with their MPV while sounding the siren and signalling for the suspect to stop, but he refused,” he said in a statement.

The car chase continued for about 1km before the accident happened.

“While chasing the suspect, the MPV skidded to the side of the road and fell into a drain near Jalan Benteng.

“Meanwhile, the suspect’s car caught fire, causing him to be burnt to death,” he said, adding that the police are still investigating the cause of the fire.

He said the two policemen, both aged 40 and 41, suffered serious injuries and were sent to Sultanah Fatimah Hospital in Muar for treatment.

“The body of the suspect has been sent to the hospital’s forensic department for a post-mortem and a DNA test to confirm his identity,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous driving and Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing civil servants from carrying out their duties.
