Two journalists receive threats over cyberbullying suicide case

SUBANG JAYA: Two journalists have been threatened by those involved in the cyberbullying of the late social media influencer and activist Rajeswary Appahu, says Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications Minister said both journalists received messages as well as photographs of their residences.

“They are very scared. This is a criminal threat. Some of them (cyberbullies) hide behind fake accounts,” he said during the launch event of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Experience Centre at CelcomDigi Hub here on Tuesday, July 9.

“If you dare to speak, you should dare to face the consequences. Hiding behind fake accounts indicates something is amiss.

“The problem now is that cyberbullying is being carried out by inviting people in live broadcasts to collectively insult and ridicule others,” he added.

Fahmi instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to take action against those commenting during livestreams on social media where words used can be interpreted as cyberbullying or if inappropriate comments are posted.

Fahmi also said he would meet Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo and the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said to elaborate on the cyberbullying issue in Parliament on Wednesday.

Police have arrested a 35-year-old woman for allegedly making threats online against the late Rajeswary.
