Visit Melaka Year 2024: JPJ inspects tour and express buses

MELAKA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) complemented the Visit Melaka Year 2024 to ensure the safety of holidaymakers by conducting checks on tour and express buses.

Melaka JPJ director Muhammad Firdaus Shariff said a total of 280 buses were checked during a joint operation that started on Friday (July 5) and ended on Friday (July 17).

“Our aim to hold the operation was to ensure safe travel for tourists during the Visit Melaka Year 2024 period as well as the passengers using express buses,” he said at the end of the operation at the Ayer Keroh Gateway rest and recreational site here.

Muhammad Firdaus said action was taken against 21 of the buses by the issuance of notices of compounds, four buses were prohibited from continuing their services while four more vehicles were directed to be sent for inspections during the 12-day operation.

He said among the offences committed by the drivers were no valid public service vehicle (PSV) licences, no fire extinguishers and first aid boxes placed in buses as well as smoking while ferrying passengers.

The operation, he added, saw a force of 30 JPJ officers, ten officials from the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, five each from the National Anti-Drug Agency and police.
