GEORGE TOWN: Penang is listed as the second best place for solo travellers in Southeast Asia by Lonely Planet.

Morgan Awyong’s article, published on July 12, said Penang is best known for its vibrant street food and creative local culture.

“Penang itself is divided into the mainland and Penang Island.

“The latter is where the UNESCO-listed streets of George Town reside, a treasure trove of decorated pre-war shophouses and clan houses intermixed with cute cafes and a street art scene that adds whimsy to the sleepy city,” Awyong wrote.

The Singaporean-based writer said individual travellers could reserve activities such as cooking classes and walking tours.

The article highlighted how meal-centric hawkers often operate for short hours, with some showing up for breakfast and others for dinner. When hungry, travellers could get a quick bowl of wonton (dumpling) noodles or Penang Laksa (spicy noodles).

For solo travellers on a budget, it recommended popular locations such as New Lane, Kimberley Street, and Chulia Street, where they can grab a meal for as low as RM10.

The article also pointed out Penang’s Peranakan heritage and weekend markets, such as the one at the Hin Market at the Hin Bus Depot.

Other destinations listed in the article were Singapore in first place, Danang in third, Siem Reap in fourth, Bangkok in fifth, Hanoi in sixth and Bali in seventh place.
