Motorcyclist killed after ramming into rear of MPV on Penang Bridge

GEORGE TOWN: A motorcyclist was killed after ramming into the rear of a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) which made a hasty turn into the emergency lane on the Penang Bridge on Sunday.

The impact led to the 38-year-old victim being thrown off his bike before hitting the curb of the bridge which led to his death.

Northeast district OCPD ACP Razlam Ab Hamid said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene with injuries on his body.

He said the incident had occurred at KM7.4 of the bridge from the mainland to the island, and that the 22-year-old driver of the MPV had swerved into the emergency area to change drivers.

“The motorcyclist died at the scene due to serious injuries while the car driver was not injured,” he said when contacted on Monday (Aug 12).

ACP Razlam added that further investigation revealed that the driver and his friend were returning from Kuala Lumpur.

The driver has also been arrested but granted police bail pending an investigation of the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

The victim’s body has been sent to Penang Hospital for post-mortem.
