Kg Kerinchi drain collapse not caused by our pipes, says Indah Water

KUALA LUMPUR: The recent drain and sidewalk collapse on Jalan Pantai Permai in Kampung Kerinchi here was not caused by sewage pipes, says Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd.

In a statement on Friday (Aug 30), IWK said its operations team inspected the scene upon receiving a report from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and found the sewage flow uninterrupted.

“Further inspection was done on Thursday (Aug 29) afternoon via CCTV and the investigation found the pipes and sewers in good condition with no signs of damage,” it read.

IWK said it believed the collapse was caused by other factors that required investigation by different agencies.

“The results of the CCTV investigation have been passed to DBKL,” it added.

On Monday (Aug 26) a collapsed drain caused a large cavity to form along Jalan Pantai Permai, resulting in part of the sidewalk collapsing as well, based on photos of the incident.

It has since been cordoned off by DBKL.

Two other sinkholes appeared in Kuala Lumpur over the past week.

In the first incident at Jalan Masjid India on Aug 23, Indian tourist Vijayalalaksmi, 48, from Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh, fell into an 8m-deep sinkhole.

Another sinkhole appeared near the police beat base in Masjid India on Wednesday (Aug 28), likely due to heavy rain, but no incidents were reported.
