Mahkota polls: Wanita MCA ready to work hard to ensure BN victory

KUALA LUMPUR: Wanita MCA plans to rally its members in Mahkota to ensure Barisan Nasional’s victory in the upcoming Mahkota by-election in Johor on Sept 28, says Datuk Wong You Fong.

The Wanita MCA chief said that MCA’s 3,987 members, who are part of the 17.8% of the total Chinese voters in the constituency, would support Barisan’s efforts to retain the seat.

“Given that Barisan is the leading party in Johor, MCA members will work diligently to secure a significant victory in the Mahkota by-election,” she said.

“Each Polling District Center (PDM) will be ‘adopted’ by MCA division leaders. With support from the Kluang Wanita and Youth MCA divisions, we will work hard to bring back victory.

“Wanita MCA will be involved in all aspects of the election preparation, and the groundwork has already begun, also we are ready to provide full support and assistance to Barisan,” she added during a press conference at Wisma MCA on Friday (Sept 6).

Additionally, she announced that the division’s by-election machinery would be headed by Wanita MCA deputy chairman Tee Hooi Ling, with support from members across the country actively participating in the campaign.

The Election Commission has set Sept 28 as polling day for the Mahkota by-election, while nomination and early voting have been set for Sept 14 and 24, respectively.

The seat fell vacant after the death of assemblywoman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2.

Sharifah Azizah, a former Johor Wanita Umno chief, won with a majority of 5,166 votes in the March 2022 state election.

Meanwhile, Wong also said that the Wanita MCA annual general meeting would be held on Oct 19 at the Wisma MCA.

Wong announced that Wanita MCA would celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025 under the theme “Remarkable Women Frontiers of the Future.”

The celebration will feature a series of events to honour their five decades of achievements, starting from Oct 19 this year and continuing until August next year.

Key events include a grand opening ceremony and dinner featuring talent performances from state representatives, local talent exchanges, and the publication of a bilingual commemorative magazine highlighting the contributions of 50 notable women across various sectors.

Additional activities include discussions on local hot topics, fundraising charity sales, and the release of 50th-anniversary memorabilia such as T-shirts and eco-bags.

A tea party for former and current members will also be held, and a talent pool initiative will be launched to focus on recruiting young women and encouraging their participation in politics.

The celebration would also feature free health check-ups in collaboration with local health organisations.

Wong added that these activities would begin after the annual conference and be held nationwide. She called on all members and the public to participate in this significant milestone celebration.
