Malaysians urged to stay vigilant as Typhoon Krathon approaches Taiwan

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians residing in or visiting areas in Taiwan expected to be hit by Typhoon Krathon when it makes landfall on the island’s southwest coast on Wednesday (Oct 2) have been urged to remain vigilant and follow all safety instructions issued by local authorities.

Wisma Putra said it is closely monitoring the approach of the typhoon.

“The local authorities have issued land and sea advisories for the typhoon in the southern and south-eastern regions, while heavy rains and strong winds are expected in the next few days.

“Stay informed through reliable news sources and adhere to local advisories regarding evacuation, travel, and outdoor activities,” it said in an advisory on Tuesday (Oct 1).

Malaysians in Taiwan who require consular assistance, or who have not yet registered their presence, are strongly encouraged to contact the Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre in Taipei at +886 2 2713 2626 or +886 910 725 438 or [email protected]

“The Foreign Ministry will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary,” it said.

Reuters reported that Taiwan had mobilised nearly 40,000 troops to be on standby for rescue efforts as the powerful typhoon approached its populous southwest coast, which is bracing for a storm surge.

Some flights were cancelled, a rail line was closed and in the major port city of Kaohsiung, shops and restaurants shut and streets were mostly deserted.
