QuickCheck: Was a man seen using a firearm in a public place in Selangor?
GIVEN how rarely firearms are seen and heard in Malaysia, any claim that shots were fired tends to go viral quickly. This is especially so if the incident allegedly happened in a public place.
Recently, a video of a man using a firearm in a public place went viral along with the claim that this happened in a public place in Subang, Selangor.
Is this true?
VERDICT:
TRUE
This is in fact true as a crow-shooting operation was organised by the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) on Sept 28, says Asst Comm Wan Azlan Wan Mamat.
The Subang Jaya OCPD said that a notice was issued to the public by the council prior to the operation, which had received police approval.
“The operation received approval from the Firearms Licensing Unit of the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters. The operation included 25 public participants who hold firearms licences,” said ACP Wan Azlan.
He added that the operation was conducted in collaboration with the Subang Jaya and Serdang district police headquarters to control the crow population in the area.
“Safety measures were taken, and no untoward incidents occurred. The public is advised not to circulate the video or to speculate on it as that could cause public alarm,” said ACP Wan Azlan.
