14-Yr-Old Boy In China Left Disabled After Being Punished To Do 1000 Squats

There is a difference between punishment and abuse.

As someone who exercises often, it is beyond my comprehension why anyone would need to do a ridiculous number of squats during a workout.

And it proves my point, especially when a then 13-year-old boy from Shandong was hospitalised last year after being made to do 1000 squats.

The incident made the news after negotiations between the boy’s family and the camp organisers fell through.

The child was attending a week-long summer camp when he was given the ridiculous punishment for talking to other participants.

Umm… weren’t there other ways to teach the kid a lesson?

After hitting about 200 squats, the boy stopped, prompting an instructor to deliver a kick, causing the kid to fall.

They also allegedly left him lying on the floor for 30 minutes, only pulling him up on a stool when his parents were about to arrive.

Initially waving off his sore muscles to over-exertion, the boy was admitted to a hospital three days later after still experiencing soreness.

He was then diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a condition where muscles break down rapidly and can cause kidney and liver failure.

According to his parents, doctors said the boy would never enjoy an active lifestyle and partake in sports again.

Seeking compensation for their son’s injuries, both parties initially agreed that the camp organiser would bear all of the kid’s medical treatment, tutoring fees and transport costs, and compensation for any missed work opportunities.

However, they ended up only making a one-time payment of 18K yuan (S$3.3K) and allegedly refusing any responsibility for any future complications a year after the incident.

Netizens were shocked by the incident that has since been brought to the courts and they have called out the camp organisers for “ruining the kid’s future with their actions”.

“Who would be silly enough to give out such a punishment?” read a comment while another said, “One stupid move has possibly disabled someone for life”.
