Pink dolphins attract more tourists to Kampot’s Prek Tnaot fishing community

PHNOM PENH: Following the publicity of the Pink Dolphins on social media by the ministries, institutions, media and influencers, the number of visitors to the Pink Dolphin boat tour has now significantly increased, as a result, reservations have to be made at least in two days advance.

Under the leadership and guidance of Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, with the direct participation of the Kampot Provincial Fisheries Administration and partner organisations, the number of pink dolphins in the area has increased to 70.

The number of Irrawaddy dolphins has not yet been determined, and one dugong is a permanent resident.

Ouk Sovannarith, President of Prek Tnaot Fishing Community, emphasised that “some tourists who want to visit the pink dolphins and the Irrawaddy dolphins must book at least two days in advance because the community boats are limited while the number of tourists who want to see the dolphins is high.” For boat and food reservations, tourists can contact 089 219 524.

The community leader thanked the Minister of Agriculture, relevant ministries, authorities, and other stakeholders for helping prevent fishing crimes, conserving natural resources including the mangrove forest, which is a habitat for aquatic animals that feed on dolphins, and protecting and expanding sea grasses that provide food for dugong.

He reiterated that this achievement has helped the community economically and has ensured sustainability of natural resources, in line with the policy of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries to improve the livelihoods of Cambodian people. – Khmer Times
