Gen Z Employee Resigns From Job With WhatsApp Text That Says “Sorry. And Bye”
When quitting a job, one is expected to submit an official resignation letter and serve a notice period. That procedure is understood as the norm across all jobs, right?
Apparently not.
A Malaysian netizen recently started a Threads post calling out a young employee, presumably a Gen Z, for their unusual and frankly unprofessional way of resigning.
“Today’s youth. MIA and doesn’t come to work, and doesn’t answer calls. Modern day resignation: WhatsApp sent, job ended,” he wrote in Malay.
Accompanying his caption was a screenshot of two texts from his former employee. The first was a PDF document containing a resignation letter, and the second, a message that read: “Sorry. And bye.”
His employee had basically ghosted him and tapped out of the job without an explanation.
The post has since gone viral, leaving netizens shocked at the employee’s behaviour.
Many were angered by the “informal” resignation, with a number calling it “disrespectful” and “insulting”.
Some shared similar challenges they’ve experienced with younger employees, with the general consensus being that “Gen Zs need to learn about manners and work ethic”.
“Why is the current generation losing common sense? Quite concerning for our future,” complained one netizen.
However, there were a handful of netizens who didn’t see any issue with the Gen Z’s resignation method.
They believe that young people these days have simply learnt to “draw clear boundaries” when it comes to having work-life balance.
“Why should we become corporate slaves? [It’s] not a healthy lifestyle and you definitely won’t like it as well. But oh well, go ahead and be close-minded,” asserted a netizen.
Another comment defending Gen Zs brought up how employers can fire someone with 24 hours’ notice”. “Why can’t employees do the same?” they questioned.
Fair point.
