Edited clip of PM’s CNN interview gives wrong impression, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent interview with CNN has been edited and taken out of context to give the impression that the government recognises Israel’s right to exist.

Unity government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said only one part of the Prime Minister’s interview with the channel’s Richard Quest was being shared on social media.

“Until today, we have never recognised the state of Israel,” the Communications Minister told a post-Cabinet meeting press conference here on Friday (Nov 15).

He said Anwar had been asked for his views on the Palestinian conflict and stated Malaysia’s strong stance that Palestine and its people should be protected.

“In fact, what was referred to as the ‘Two-state Solution’ is a statement not made today or yesterday, but since 2002 and… by previous prime ministers.

“It was mentioned in 2002, 2005, 2016, 2020 and 2021.

“So it is clear that this has been the government stance for some time,” Fahmi said, referring to a plan to create a Palestinian state separate from Israel, aimed at bringing lasting peace.

Asked if he had watched Anwar’s interview, Fahmi said he viewed it in its totality.

He said it was disappointing that the Prime Minister’s effort to file a motion to expel Israel from the United Nations was not even mentioned in the edited clip shared on social media.

“This was not even mentioned by this group (sharing the video), it is unfair, and I, on behalf of the Cabinet, need to give an explanation,” said Fahmi.

Asked if action would be taken against those behind the edited clip, Fahmi said it was possible.

“We will take action. And I would like to issue a reminder that the government has no intention to stop the media from reporting, but they need to be careful.

“(Do not) entertain speculation and (treat) it as if it were a fact.

“I will ask the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (to pursue this),” he added.
