Sacks, cages believed to be used to round up cats seized from Cheras apartment

KAJANG: A car, sacks, and several cages believed to have been used to round up cats at an apartment in Batu 9, Cheras, have been seized.

This follows a viral video showing a group of men rounding up cats before allegedly disposing of them.

The Selangor Veterinary Department said a team of officers was dispatched to the scene on Sunday (Jan 12).

“Initial checks revealed the incident occurred between 9am and 3pm on Saturday (Jan 11), during a ‘gotong-royong’ event organised by the apartment’s joint management body.

“We seized a car, sacks, and several cages believed to have been used to round up the cats,” the department said.

The department also recorded the statements of several individuals believed to have been involved in the incident.

“We are investigating under Subsection 29(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015. The investigation paper will be referred to the Selangor Prosecution Unit once the investigation is completed,” it added.

It was reported that a representative of the group of men caught on camera allegedly rounding up cats to dispose of them denied allegations of animal abuse.

In response to the uploaded video claiming that the cats were being rounded up at an apartment in Batu 9, Cheras, to be disposed of elsewhere, Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Naazron Abdul Yusof said a counter police report was also lodged.

“Investigations showed that a report was lodged denying any animal abuse by the group by a representative who is also a member of the apartment resident committee,” he said.

He added that the incident occurred on Saturday, with the counter report lodged on Sunday.

Further checks showed that the Veterinary Department was also aware of the incident and that a complaint had been filed with them as well.
