Tragic accident claims life of dedicated runner in Kota Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: A 45-year-old woman, known for running in tribute to her ailing father, died in a tragic road accident early on Tuesday (Jan 28) morning.

Scarlette Sue, an avid runner, was jogging near KM7.2 by ITCC Shopping Mall towards Donggongon town when a car struck her from behind at around 6am.

Penampang police chief Supt Sammy Newton said they received a report at 6.20am and dispatched a team to the scene.

Paramedics from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, confirmed she died at the scene from severe head injuries.

A 21-year-old local male driver, who was uninjured, has been detained for questioning, and the case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

A friend, Emma Aaron, shared fond memories of discussing running attire with Sue, particularly their shared interest in the Nike brand.

“Rest in peace, dear friend. You will always be remembered and loved. Although you are gone, the memories we shared will be loved forever. Love you Sue,” she wrote.

Scarlette Sue dedicated her daily runs to her father’s recovery, believing in staying strong for him while he remains hospitalised.

Running was her method of coping with stress and demonstrating strength to her father.

Penampang police are urging witnesses to provide any information.

Those with details can contact investigating officer Insp Saparia Ladoni at 019-809 5133.

Authorities have also urged the public not to share images or videos of the accident on social media to respect the victim’s family.

Motorists and pedestrians are reminded to exercise caution on roads, especially in areas frequented by joggers.
