“I Have Enough Money”: Jacky Cheung Refutes Rumours That He Keeps Holding Concerts To Pay Off Debts
Stephanie Chan2025-03-07T23:03:25+08:00Heavenly King Jacky Cheung, 63, celebrated a historic milestone on February 23 after successfully holding his 1000th concert in Haikou, China.
The Cantopop icon’s Haikou stop marked the 218th show of his ongoing Jacky Cheung 60+ World Tour, which kicked off in June 2023.
He is the first Chinese artist to ever reach the incredible 1000th show mark.
Sadly, Jacky’s achievement has been overshadowed by claims that he’s been working so hard to “pay off debts”. It was even alleged that his wife, Hong Kong former actress May Lo, lost HK$2bil (S$347mil) in failed investments, and the couple are in financial distress.
Jacky finally took a stand against the unfounded rumours during his Guangzhou show on February 28.
He said: “Actually, I’ve done over 1000 concerts, and many people have been asking “Do you not have enough money yet?”. I have enough. I really have enough money to use. People also ask “Are you in a lifelong debt?”. To clear things up one more time — I really don’t owe anyone money!”
So why has Jacky been working so hard? Well, it’s simply because he can, and he loves what he does.
He explained: “[Performing] makes me happy. I wish for all those who love hearing me sing to be able to hear my voice.”
Jacky also revealed he’s a thrifty person, and is very “stingy” when it comes to managing his finances.
He also responded to the online chatter judging him for wearing the same clothes for the past 10 years.
“I’d like to let everyone know I have many clothes that I’ve owned for over 20 years. This just proves that the clothes made 20 years ago are of good quality, and no matter how much I wear them, they don’t fall apart. This also proves I’ve maintained my figure well,” he quipped.
Jacky then put emphasis on his healthy financial status again, stating: “I will say this another time. I truly do not owe people money. When I was younger, my mum used to tell me “it’s tough to borrow money. You have to work hard on your own.”. I’ve kept her advice in mind this whole time, so in reality, I’m afraid of owing people money, and it’s something I don’t dare do.”
Jacky held a total of 11 shows during the Singapore stop of his tour last year, drawing over 88, 000 fans over four weekends in July and August. Those who tried to snag tickets to watch him live would know just how difficult it was.
Clearly, people want to see Jacky sing, and he’s more than willing to make sure almost everyone gets that chance.
