US ambassador to meet PM on Tuesday evening
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to meet with the United States ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan on Tuesday (March 11) evening.
The Prime Minister’s senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said the meeting is expected to discuss issues relating to bilateral relations and cooperation between Malaysia and the United States in various fields.
“Besides that, they will also touch on the Asean 2025 chairmanship, especially regarding the Asean-US Special Asean Summit.
“Further information regarding the outcome of the meeting will be shared later,” said Tunku Nashrul in a press briefing published on Anwar’s Facebook account on Monday (March 11) afternoon.
The previous 12th Asean-US summit was held in October 2024 in Vientiane, Laos, and was attended by then-US secretary of state Antony Blinken.
Last month, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia is making efforts to hold a Special Asean-US Summit.
“We are trying to be balanced so that we don’t lean towards anyone because we already have the Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)- China Summit… So, Asean will continue to drive the direction as an integrated Asean and remain neutral and not take sides with anyone,” added Mohamad.
According to Matrade, the United States remains Malaysia’s third largest export country at RM17.25bil worth of total exports as of January this year.
