Luxury car seized in special operation by JPJ in Melaka

MELAKA: A 40-year-old driver of a luxury car found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time when his vehicle was seized by the Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ) during a special operation targeting overloaded heavy vehicles here.

In a statement to The Star, a Melaka JPJ spokesman said the enforcement officers discovered that the luxury car’s road tax had expired since September 2024, during an inspection at one of the roadblocks set up from 12am to 9am on Thursday (March 13).

The spokesman confirmed that the car was confiscated under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987, with additional offences recorded under Section 23(1) and Section 90(1) of APJ 1987 for failing to renew the road tax and insurance.

The spokesman said the special operation targeted overloaded heavy vehicles across various locations in the state.

“JPJ Melaka inspected a total of 174 vehicles with 39 vehicles ordered to undergo weighing under Section 63(1) of APJ 1987 and Section 82(2) of the Land Public Transport Act (APAD) 2010.

“Out of these, 38 vehicles were found to be overloaded, while one failed to appear for weighing, resulting in a notice being issued under Section 63(1) of APJ 1987,” he said, adding that 128 notices of compound for various offences were also issued.

The spokesman said that strict enforcement measures will be continued to ensure road safety and compliance.
