KL Tower belongs to govt, only change of management involved, says Comms Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry emphasises that Kuala Lumpur Tower (KL Tower) remains government-owned, and the concession takeover only involves a change in management and operations, which was carried out through a request for proposal (RFP) notice.

The ministry said on Monday (March 31) that the RFP was an open tender for a public-private partnership (PPP) project in line with the Cabinet’s decision.

“For this purpose, the Public-Private Partnership Unit in the Prime Minister’s Department (UKAS-JPM) has executed the RFP process, and subsequently, the Cabinet endorsed the successful bidder based on the RFP evaluation.

“The successful bidder was announced by the government on May 29, 2024,” the statement read.

The statement added that the ministry is closely monitoring the latest developments following the issue of the KL Tower concession takeover, which was conducted according to the concession agreement signed by the government.

Additionally, it noted that the ministry is aware of the writ of summons and injunction application filed by Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd (MKLSB) following the appointment of the new concession company.

“Therefore, the government, through this ministry, will ensure that any actions taken henceforth are in accordance with legal processes.

“In this regard, the ministry requests that all parties allow the legal process to proceed smoothly,” it stated.

At the same time, all parties involved, including the public, are advised not to make any statements or take actions that might disrupt the ongoing legal process.

“The Communications Ministry remains committed to good governance and will ensure that this matter is handled appropriately,” the statement added.

Earlier, Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd and Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd issued a joint statement saying that operations at KL Tower would continue as usual on the second day of Hari Raya (April 1) despite an ongoing legal dispute over its management.

The two companies said any attempt to take over operations at KL Tower would be unlawful due to their ongoing suit pending in court against the award of a 20-year concession to manage the tower to a different company.
