Johor students receive Jalur Gemilang badges

KOTA TINGGI: Over 580,000 primary and secondary students in Johor have received their Jalur Gemilang badge—a patriotic initiative aimed at instilling national pride among schoolchildren.

Johor education and information committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the State Education Department is working closely with schools to ensure the badges meet standardised specifications and have a uniform colour scheme across the state.

He added that efforts are underway to coordinate the sale and replacement of the badges through school cooperatives, making it easier for students and parents to obtain a new one if lost or damaged.

“While the badge was initially distributed for free, we are exploring ways to ensure it remains consistently available.

“This includes working with schools to stock the item in their cooperatives for easier access,” he said when met after the state-level Jalur Gemilang Badging Ceremony at SK Bandar Penawar 2 on Monday (April 21).

Aznan reminded parents and students that the Jalur Gemilang pin symbolises patriotism and national unity, and should be worn with care and respect.

“This is not just a decorative item. It is a reminder of our shared identity as Malaysians. Parents should advise their children to wear it properly and avoid misplacing it,” he said.

In response to concerns from parents about the pin’s attachment methods—some being sewn and others magnetic—Aznan clarified that while the method of attachment may vary, the design and size must remain consistent with the official version issued.

He also addressed criticism that the initiative is only relevant during the Merdeka month in August, stressing that patriotism should be nurtured year-round.

“This is not just about commemorating Merdeka. It’s about instilling a lasting sense of patriotism. Love for the country doesn’t end after August,” he said.
