Tengku Zafrul, Amir Hamzah heads to Washington: Malaysia seeks fair resolution on US tariffs

JOHOR BARU: Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan head for Washington DC to initiate talks on the United States’ reciprocal tariffs tonight.

We are scheduled to meet the US Trade Representative and his team as well as other stakeholders on April 24 to discuss the way forward,” said Tengku Zafrul during his keynote address at the inaugural Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) Joint Business and Investment Forum in Persada Johor here on Monday (April 21).

He reiterated that Malaysia would not implement retaliatory tariffs in response and was fully committed to securing a favourable resolution.

“We must and will find a mutually acceptable, fair and equitable solution to this issue, both bilaterally and multilaterally.

“The process will be long and certainly complex, but we will do our best,” said Zafrul.

On April 1, US President Donald Trump announced retaliatory tariffs against several countries, with Malaysia facing a 24% tariff.
