Traffic accidents in PJ rise by 35% this year

PETALING JAYA: The number of traffic accidents in the district has increased by 53 cases so far this year compared to last year, according to Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulnizam Ja’afar (pic).

A total of 204 cases were recorded between January and May, compared to 151 cases during the same period last year, marking an increase of 35.1%.

ACP Shahrulnizam shared this information with reporters after attending the PJ police traffic operation using drones on Wednesday (June 11).

Motorcyclists continue to account for the highest fatalities, with 52 deaths recorded last year. As of May this year, there have been 34 deaths involving motorcycle riders.

“Accidents involving motorcycle riders commonly occur between 6am and 8am daily,” he noted.

Last year, a total of 45,958 summonses were issued for various offences.

“Among the main factors for the accidents are driving too closely to the vehicle in front, failure to control the vehicle resulting in swerving off the road, as well as fatigue and sleepiness,” ACP Shahrulnizam explained.

He advised road users to always drive and ride safely to reduce the number of accidents.
