Free MyKad chip replacement from Sept 23 to Oct 7

KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry will offer free replacement of damaged MyKad chips nationwide starting Tuesday (Sept 23) until Oct 7, in line with the launch of the Budi95 initiative.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the initiative would ensure Malaysians continue to have access to targeted subsidies under Budi95 without disruption.

“According to National Registration Department records, a total of 294,715 replacement applications for damaged chips or cards were received between January and August this year.

*The number has been rising in recent months, with 32,819 applications in June, 40,371 in July, and 45,411 in August. For September alone, up to Sept 21, there have already been 22,858 applications,” he said in a statement on Monday.

Based on recent averages, about 43,000 faulty chip replacement requests are recorded each month, he said.

“We estimate that the free replacement exercise, running from Sept 23 to Oct 7, will cost about RM714,660, including related expenses.

“The government is fully committed to covering the cost of replacements during this period to ensure that no Malaysian is denied access to Budi95 subsidies due to technical issues with their MyKad,” he added.

Saifuddin Nasution also urged Malaysians to take care of their MyKad, reminding them that the national identification card is not only a vital identity document but also a key to various government services, including targeted subsidies.

“The government stands by the principles of care and inclusivity, ensuring that every Malaysian receives the benefits promised without anyone being left behind,” he said.
